Wooden Phoenix Pen (Spalted Silky Oak Timber: Antique Pewter Fittings)

The Phoenix pen is a very unique pen with the antique pewter fittings fully capturing the myth of the phoenix in great detail. Flames are depicted at the tip of the pen, the phoenix bird is shown rising from the ashes and the clip details the majestic tail of the phoenix. An amber crystal on the clip and cap add to the beauty and mystery of this regal firebird.

The phoenix is a sacred firebird said to have spectacular feathers of gold and red. Its story has roots in many ancient civilizations- most notably the Egyptian and Greek. After 1,000 years the phoenix builds itself a nest of twigs and branches, which then burns fiercely until they are both ashes. From the ashes a young phoenix appears, renewing the life cycle of the bird and making the phoenix virtually immortal and invincible. This pen is particularly meaningful to those who have been through difficult times and triumphed.

This phoenix pen is made from Australian spalted silky oak timber. Spalting is a valued wood colouration process caused naturally by fungi. Spalting increases the contrasts of light and dark colours in the timber and makes brown and black lines running through the wood appear. This timber was grown on a beautiful block of land in Grafton owned by my father and fell due to natural causes and lay undisturbed in its bushland habitat enough years for the spalting process to begin. It was then carried on the shoulders of a man in a flannelette shirt, strapped onto the roof of a Toyota Landcruiser, travelled to sunny Queensland where is has been sawn into pens, pencils, letter opener and ice cream scoop blanks.

This pen is created by an artisan who hand turns each one on a lathe in North Brisbane. Using a meticulous thirteen step sanding process and 10 coats of CA we highlight the simple, innate beauty of the timber. The natural uniqueness in the woodgrain and timber colour variations, means that each wooden pen we create is one of a kind.

The Phoenix pen is a solid, medium plus weight pen (65g) with a silent, smooth twist mechanism and features a black ink Parker style refill. You can purchase our quality Parker style refills below.
